Usages

Common Uses of Bentonite
Drilling Fluids (Oil & Gas Industry): Bentonite is used in drilling muds due to its ability to swell and form a thick slurry that helps cool and lubricate drilling equipment, as well as lift drill cuttings to the surface.

Cat Litter: Bentonite’s absorbent properties make it an ideal material for use in cat litter, where it clumps and traps moisture and odors.

Foundry Sands: Used as a bonding agent in the foundry industry to help mold and cast metals.

Waterproofing and Sealing: It is used for lining ponds, landfills, and other water storage areas to prevent leakage.

Cosmetics & Skincare: Bentonite is included in many skincare products, such as face masks, due to its ability to absorb excess oil and impurities.

Food Industry: It is used in food processing as a clarifying agent, for example in the production of wine, juices, and edible oils.

Agriculture: Bentonite is used as a soil conditioner and to improve water retention in soil.

Medicinal Uses: Bentonite is sometimes ingested in small quantities for its supposed detoxifying properties or used in wound care products.

General Description

Bentonite is a type of clay composed primarily of montmorillonite, a mineral that expands when it comes into contact with water. It is typically formed from the alteration of volcanic ash in the presence of water.

Composition: Bentonite is mainly made up of montmorillonite clay, which is a mineral rich in silicates. It also contains other minerals such as feldspar, quartz, and mica in smaller quantities.

Color: Bentonite can range in color from white to gray, yellow, green, or brown, depending on its mineral content.

Texture: It has a soft, fine texture that makes it sticky and smooth when wet.

Properties:

  • High absorbent capacity
  • Swells when wet
  • Absorbs water and organic substances easily
  • It forms a gel-like substance when mixed with water.

Bentonite API 13A is a pure Sodium based Bentonite. It is processed from selected ore
with high montmorollinite content.

Bentonite API 13A contains more than 85% smeclite, the active clay content as
determined by colloid and x-ray diffraction.

Bentonite API 13A is used as a viscosifier and fluid loss reducing agent. It is most
effective in fresh water. Prehydrated BENTONITE API 13A can be used in brakish and
salt water.
