Usages

De-icing and Anti-icing: Calcium chloride is widely used for melting ice on roads, sidewalks, and runways in winter due to its ability to lower the freezing point of water.

Dust Control: It is used for controlling dust on unpaved roads and construction sites by absorbing moisture and binding dust particles together.

Food Industry: Used as a food additive (E509) for improving texture and firmness, especially in canned vegetables and fruits. It is also used in cheese making and as a pickling agent.

Construction: Used as a setting accelerator in concrete, helping to speed up curing time in cold weather.

Desiccant: Anhydrous calcium chloride is used in desiccators to remove moisture from gases or liquids and is also used in some packaging to keep items dry.

Water Treatment: It is used in water treatment plants to help with softening water by replacing sodium ions with calcium ions, which reduce water hardness.

Agriculture: It’s used in some cases for soil conditioning or for providing calcium to plants in certain soils.

Industrial Applications: Used in the production of chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide through the process of electrolysis.

Used as a stabilizing agent in petroleum drilling operations.

Calcium Chloride can be used to form brines with density of 1398 kg/m3 (11.67 lb/gal).

In addition, solid Calcium Chloride can be added to lower-density mixed brine solutions to
increase the density of the brine. It can also be used in oil drilling, drilling fluid, completion fluid as well as a petrochemical dehydrating agent.

General Description

Calcium Chloride (CaCl₂) is a highly versatile chemical compound made up of calcium and chlorine. It is commonly found as a white, odorless salt in both anhydrous and hydrated forms.

Appearance: White, odorless crystalline solid or granules (in anhydrous form), and may appear as a colorless or white crystalline substance in its hydrated form.

Solubility: Highly soluble in water, which releases a large amount of heat. It is also deliquescent, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air.

Properties

• Melting Point: Around 772°C (1422°F)
• Boiling Point: Decomposes rather than boiling at around 1,935°C (3,515°F)
• Hygroscopic: Absorbs water from its surroundings, which is a key property used in several applications.

Calcium Chloride is a ready-to-use white powder. It is non-toxic, odorless, extremely hygroscopic, and easily soluble in water to form a slightly acidic solution. It can be used to achieve rapid density increase with minimum volume addition. It also provides inhibition, preventing the hydration and migration of swelling clays and can be used in packer fluids.

Calcium Chloride is available in anhydrous (CaCl2) and dihydrate (CaCl2•H2O) in forms of
prills, powder, granule or flakes.
